Volunteer
EMANCIPE+ relies on the ongoing support of volunteers to help us maintain our daily operations and provide the highest possible level of customer service. We are happy to have a diverse and dedicated group of volunteers who work in various capacities to help us fulfill our mission. Please visit the Events Calendar to see the orientation schedule. If you are interested in attending, please send an email to volunteer@emancipet.org.
Clinic Support Ambassador:
Sterile surgical packs are used for each pet during the surgery day. Clinic Support Ambassadors help ensure that the surgery day runs smoothly by maintaining surgery packs. This position also helps assemble the e-collars that protect pets from irritating their stitches after surgery. In addition, this position supports our technicians by helping monitor the animals that have been recovered from surgery and are resting in their crates.
Clerical Support Ambassador:
We perform approximately 180 surgeries a day, and a certain amount of paperwork is associated with each pet: vaccination certificates, intake forms, surgery notes, microchip paperwork and so on. That adds up to a lot of paperwork! Our clerical volunteers help us keep up with it all by scanning paperwork, assembling discharge packets, preparing rabies certificates, etc. As a service to our clients, we try to make reminder calls the week of their appointment. Clerical Support Ambassadors also help our staff and clients by re-scheduling missed appointments. With nearly 900 pets a week coming through our different facilities, you can imagine the number of phone calls we have to make. Clerical Support Ambassadors help us make those calls Monday through Saturday. These calls can also be made from home if you have Excel and can receive the call lists via email the day before.
Free Day Ambassadors:
Our mobile clinic goes to community centers in East Austin every Thursday, Friday and Saturday to provide free spay/neuter surgeries on a first come-first served basis. The mobile clinic arrives at 8 a.m., but most clients begin arriving as early as 5:30 or 6:00 a.m. to secure a spot in line. Free Day Ambassadors arrive at our East Austin locations at 6am to establish and maintain a sign-in sheet for clients. Ambassadors hand out paperwork and answer client questions about how the day works.
Animal Care:
Animal Care is our primary opportunity for hands-on interaction with pets. After surgery, our technicians monitor animals as they awaken from anesthesia. Our animal care volunteers help keep them comfortable during this time, clean up after them if they have accidents, and generally make them feel better. This position requires at least some prior experience handling animals, since pets are sometimes confused and scared when they wake up after surgery and all Animal Care volunteers must be at least 17 years old. Once you have completed orientation and an additional interview by our Clinic Manager, we ask that volunteers interested in this position commit to training at least 6 hours per week for 2 months. There is a limited number of these positions available.
